It is situated on the northern edge of Victoria (Rabat), Gozo capital, on the highest point of the city. It can be reached through a steep ascent.
The Citadel is an ancient and compact fortification, that can be accessed through a huge stone arch opened in 1956 to allow the passage of the Virgin statue, which is carried on procession on Assumption day.
The portal directly opens on the square where Saint Mary's Cathedral (1697), the Tribunal (1620), the Palace of the governors and the archbishop’s palace (1642) lie. The Citadel is surrounded by bastions and tall circular walls, both on the north side looking over the countryside, and on the south side looking at the city. From the Citadel, right in the middle of Gozo at 150 mt. a.s.l., you can enjoy a stunning view all around.
At night, the Citadel shows a particularly charming atmosphere. The almost desert little streets take visitors back to the time of the Knights. Every year around the 10th to 15th August, in Victoria and the Citadel, the celebration of Saint Mary takes place, with feasts and parades. Inside the Citadel there are four museums: the Archaeological Museum; the Folklore Museum; the Natural History Museum and the Armoury.
